Flat Bread With Mummu

I have a mission to learn the secrets of Mummu's flat bread. Mummu is Ämmi's mother (my husbands grandmother) and lives about an one hour and half away from here. It's a day trip when we visit her. Mummu needs to know beforehand when we are coming so she can start heating the baking oven the day before. Oven needs to be really hot, about 300 celsius.

This time my sister in law was with us. She likes to bake too and so does our son. So we did bake! It is a hard job to make flat bread from the dough that weights 8 kg. It makes about 15 big flat breads. Mummu and my sister in law are resting after the bake day.

Expedition Särestöniemi

At our first walk we did a little short cut. But this time we tried to walk exactly the same path as Reidar used to walk by the river side. Beautiful sites were still there though the forest was higher than 30 years ago. It was about - 20 degrees celsius but in the forest it didn't feel that cold. And I had my warmest jacket on and about three layers underneath.

It took us about three hours to get to the Särestöniemi-museum area. We had hot drinks and freshly baked buns at the museum coffee shop. Mummi came to pick us up with car and drove us back home. Great expedition!

Making of Nutukkaat, Part 3

Just before the work shop started we boiled bark water for three hours. After coming back home we covered the reindeer skins with that water. We need to turn around those for few times during week. Work shop continues next weekend!
